What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. Headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, the organization's membership is approximately 280,000 in more than 14,700 clubs in 144 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people from diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders.
How Does Toastmasters Work?
At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to group of audience and working with fellow members in a supportive environment. A typical Toastmasters club is made up of 20 to 40 members who meets two to four times a month, each for about two hours.
In each Toastmasters meeting, members can take different roles. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice:
Prepared speech - members present speeches based on projects from the Toastmasters International Pathways educational program. The Pathways learning experience is a multi-language online learning tool allows you to leverage over 300 practical workplace skills, including:
Interview Preparation
Online Meeting Management
Leadership Development
Project Management
Conflict Resolution
Impromptu speaking - members present one-to two-minute speeches on assigned topics without prior preparation. It helps to train speakers to think on their feet.
Evaluations - Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who points out speech strengths and offers suggestions for improvement. Speech Evaluators learn to provide effective and constructive feedback to others.
